J’ai 24 ans et 2 jours.

I became 24 years old 2 days ago, and since i’m studying french I thought i would write it in french.

Ok, I know I haven’t written in a while, and that’s because it took too long to get internet to my apartment! I know, you would think things would be easier in Montreal than they are in Saudi…

Anyways, I thought I would write this post about the month and a half I have spent so far in Montreal, so here goes:

- I thought I knew what cold was, until I walked to school last week while the temperature was 14 below zero without the wind chill factor!

- I know many people always talk about homesickness, but I am surprised I don’t miss home that much. I don’t know whether its because I was too busy to be homesick, whether It needed more time, or whether its because I met some really nice people here that made me feel at home. I would really like to thank them all, especially Hamad, Hamid, Othman, and Mustafa. But, I have got to say I really miss my parents…

- The hardest thing about french is pronouncation. Most of the time you have to guess the meaning of the word. I mean so many words sound exactly the same, but you know the meaning from the context its in. Now I know how students felt in Saudi during english classes.

- The best thing I found in Montreal is that cafes are everywhere, nothing like a nice big cup of coffee early in the morning. j’adore le café beaucoup!

- I bet most of you are celebrating eid right now, but here in Montreal most of the people are celebrating eid on Thursday, because they haven’t seen the moon.

- Mobile phones here suck. I asked a shop when I first came here if they had the nokia N95, and the guy became so excited and he said, we should get it before the holidays! Come on, we had that phone in Saudi for months!!

- To get free incoming calls for my mobile phone they made me sign a 3 year contract!! or else I would have to pay for my incoming phone calls!!

- In class a few weeks ago they asked us to talk about foods from our country (again, this was not a computer Science course!). So I talked about our traditional Saudi cuisines, and after I finished a student asked me why the shishah wasn’t on my list! It turns out that they even have shishas in Mexico! I’m serious…

- Never buy furniture from IKEA, I know they might look nice, but assembling them is torture!

- When you look for a place to live, try to look for a place you will live in for a long time, because there is nothing harder and more frustrating than moving!

- Using a washer and dryer wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be!

- I still make a mess when I cook (you should see my oven)! I even make a mess when I order pizza!

- Its a good thing I brought my XBox360 with me!

- One of the weirdest thing that I found here in Montreal is that stores here open until 9 on Thursdays and Fridays, but on Saturdays and Sundays they close at 5 or 6 !! Why would they close early on weekends? I don’t get it…

- When you first move to Montreal you’ll hate it! Especially when you compare it to other cities in the Europe. After 2 weeks you’ll think to yourself “oh, I won’t be here forever. I think I’ll manage to make it”. After a month and a half you’ll eventually see the beautiful side of it, and you’ll learn to love it for its uniqueness.

Ok, I think this is enough for now…
Over and out

رحمك الله يا شيخنا

I usually write in English, but this time I need to make an exception because it is about someone I really love and care about. Last night my uncle sheik ali aljumah past away. May Allah forgive him for all his sins and grant him alfirdous…
