Blackberry and Linksys

// August 9th, 2010 // 8 Comments » // tech

I’ve had some trouble getting my blackberry to work with linksys routers. After reading a couple of posts on different forums, I found this solution which should work with any linksys. Changing these settings should allow you to connect to the blackberry server without connecting to a mobile network, you’ll get access to your email, bb messenger, etc. This is useful when you’re roaming and don’t want to be charged for data usage.

Change the wireless settings on your router to the following:

DTIM: 2 (1-255)
Fragment Threshold : 2304 (256-2346)
RTS Threshold : 2304 (0-2347)
Beacon Interval : 50 (20-1024 ms)

I used to think that having a UMA connection meant I could make long distance calls as if I was in Canada, but it turns out I need to get another service to make my UMA work while roaming.

Get your DNA analysed for $399

// November 23rd, 2008 // 12 Comments » // tech

The winner of Time Magazine’s best inventions of 2008 is “The Retail DNA Test”. There is a company named 23 and me. They analyze your DNA and send you the information they get from it. This information includes more than 90 traits and conditions which include:

- Where you come from. I registered to get access to their demo, and it turns out they show you where your ancestors lived 500 years ago.
- What your food preferences are. Like what you can’t taste.
- Your athletic ability.
- Compare yourself to any of your friends and find out if you are related. I wonder if that is how they found out Chaney and Obama are cousins?
- What your personal characteristics are.
- Health status, they have a page were they show you your Disease Risks. They also tell you how resistant you are to AIDS, or Malaria.

23andme

The Way this works is that they will send you a packet with a tube that you have to fill with saliva. After that you send them back the package and wait for your username and password in the mail. Then after you login you get to see your test results, and believe me they are really long.

This is just amazing Technology, and 23andme have been around for a while, but they used to charge 1000 Dollars and now they only charge $399.

This is a video given at Google explaining the whole concept. BTW the Co-founder of 23andme is the wife of Google’s co-founder Sergey.

Seeing how great video games have become, I thought it would be fun to take a look at the first video game ever made! In 1958 Dr. William Higinbotham created Tennis for Two, so check it out.

CitySpace, Simply Incredible

// August 13th, 2008 // 8 Comments » // tech, website

A very impressive 3D virtual world called City Space will be launched soon from LiveSpace. They released a video of the city, but it was taken down for some reason. The amazing part of this, and what makes it different from SecondLife, is that the game is rendered by the server’s side, so it would run smoothly on weak computers. This server side rendering engine is called OTOY.

TechCrunch released a copy of the video so here it is…

note: The Livespace domain whois lists brad greenspan’s name (MySpace co-founder)

// March 28th, 2008 // 8 Comments » // tech, website

The maker of the popular photo-editing software Photoshop on Thursday launched a basic version available for free online.

Photoshop Express will be completely Web-based so consumers can use it with any type of computer, operating system and browser. And, once they register, users can get to their accounts from different computers.

I tried it and it seems pretty cool for a web-based photo editor. They basically give you about 6 filters to choose from, and you could also scale, rotate, or crop an image.
